Have you ever wondered “What’s the difference between used and certified pre-owned?” They seem similar but have considerable differences. Fortunately, the finance experts at University Mazda are happy to help with any questions you might have in order to make a purchase that’s best for you. Read on to compare CPO vs. used and decide which option makes more sense for you in the Rio Rancho area.

Used Car Buying: What You Need to Know

Used cars are previously owned vehicles that vary in make, model, year, mileage, and more. So generally, used vehicles are more affordable than CPO vehicles. Another area that varies with used cars is mileage. Many used vehicles can last for hundreds of thousands of miles with regular service near Santa Fe. You should also keep in mind the following:

  • Navigate private sales with caution, given that private sellers don’t have rigorous approval methods or OEM replacement parts that a dealership like University Mazda has.
  • Bring up any vehicle issues you notice with your dealership or private seller. Make sure to factor in issues such as potential repairs when purchasing a used vehicle.
  • High-mileage used cars aren’t always bad options, especially if you’re on a strict budget. With proper care and maintenance, some vehicles can last upwards of 200,000 miles.

Buying a CPO Car: What You Need to Know

Like used vehicles, certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles have had previous owners. However, CPO models are backed by manufacturer warranties and have passed a rigorous inspection completed by a certified technician. For example, the requirements for aCPO model include the following:

  • A multi-point inspection
  • The model year has to be within five years of the current model year
  • The mileage cannot be more than the 80,000 to 100,000-mile range
  • The vehicle must be offered with extended warranties and/or limited powertrain warranties
